Termesphere Gallery
Dick Termes, an internationaly known local artist, paints on spheres which have been published in books all over the world. These globular canvases hang from ceiling motors. Each one is a complete world. As you watch them float by at one revolution per minute, you see north, south, east, west, up and down. The results look like large reflective bubbles. Some of the paintings are realistic, geometric, surrealistic or a mixture of all three.
What you are seeing when you look at a Termesphere painting is an optical illusion - an inside-out view of the total physical world around you on the outside surface of a hanging and rotating sphere. From any point when you look at the spherical paintings, the image reads correctly. Termespheres capture the up, down and all around visual world from one revolving point in space. Most of the time these spheres are painted on the outside so it takes a six point perspective system to keep all of this environment around you organized.
Termes uses illusion and impossible realities to make each piece entirely unique. He has painted more than 400 spheres. They range in size from 1 - 7 1/2 feet. There are 30 - 70 Termespheres on display at the Termesphere Gallery at any given time.
